If you want to be a writer and have always dreamt about the day when a world-famous author would not only read your writing, but also shower you with prizes then that day has finally arrived — at least for those of you that are attending 4th－8th grade. That’s because Pseudonymous Bosch, the best-selling author of The Secret Series is looking for you right here, on DOGOnews!

All you have to do is participate in our fictional writing contest. To enter, you can click here, then watch the video and listen carefully to instructions from Pseudonymous Bosch. After that, log into your iDOGO account.

Select from one of three categories — Funny, Mysterious or Strange and begin writing your fictional tale. Remember, any entries that contain facts about yourself or even worse, any bad language, will be automatically disqualified! Also, your story has to range between 100－300 words.

And, while your work is done, we will be unable to send the entry to the author until we have your Parental Consent on file. So make sure you print one out and have your parent/guardian fill it, sign it and send it to us either via e-mail at editor@dogonews.com or via snail mail to the office address specified on the form.

Now, believe it or not, Pseudonymous Bosch is going to read every single entry and decide the winner in each of the three categories. Those lucky individuals will receive a set of the entire collection of The Secret Series, as well as, his new book — Write This Book: A Do-It-Yourself Mystery — all autographed by the author of course!

“The Reading Mother” is an old poem, and I’m not sure when I first heard it. But my favorite line comes to mind whenever I see a mom reading to her child: “Richer than I you will never be — I had a mother who read to me.” Certainly, by that measure, I’m a wealthy person, as are my children.

Decades ago, educators cited (引证) reading as the most fundamental skill children acquire, and they promoted the idea that reading aloud to children is critically important. Early childhood teachers can quickly spot the students who are read to daily, as they are already on their way to becoming good future readers.

And now pediatricians (儿科医生) are also speaking of the importance of reading to children — particularly in the first three years of their lives. In a new policy announcement, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is urging its physician members to tell parents that it’s critical to read, speak and sing to children at the very beginning of their young lives, because that’s how they acquire vocabulary and other important skills that may determine later school success.

Doctors might also talk to parents about how regular reading is essential to physical development. Existing links among brain cells are strengthened. New cells are formed. Reading, as it turns out, is brain food! Maybe it’s even fair to say that no child is completely healthy if he or she has not held a book or heard a story.

In my experience, many parents and grandparents — even the wealthy and well-educated — are surprised to hear the research and learn that it’s never too soon to read to babies. The AAP and others point out that low-income children are of particular concern. Studies show that more affluent (富裕的) children hear millions more words spoken, read, or sung than do children from low­income homes. This “word gap” gives low-income children a clear academic disadvantage, which may be apparent as early as 18 months. Winter nights in rural Maine are marked by a deep silence. As someone who grew up in a city, I am acutely aware of this and sometimes find myself waiting for evidence of civilization beyond the walls of my house as I lie in bed. Every so often I receive it — the passing rumble (隆隆声) of the freight train (货运列车)．

The railroad tracks lie not 500 feet from my front door. I drive or walk over them every day. Seeing the train by day is always a treat, but hearing it in the dead of night is comforting. Long before it reaches the crossing I can sense its approach. Once past the crossing, the train clanks (发出叮当声) down the line toward Bangor and falls silent, and then I gradually fall asleep.

There are people who wrinkle their noses at the idea of living near a freight railway, as if it were unseemly. Now and then I am asked if the noise bothers me. Bothers? The only time I was bothered was a few months ago when the train stopped running. I walked down to the rails and stared to the left and right, like a parent anxious about an overdue child. What on earth had become of my train?

I asked around town, but nobody knew what happened. I took my consternation to bed with me on that particularly cold night, and I determined to call the railway the next morning to ask about its well-being. I know this is a wild fantasy, but I’ve been trying to find a legal way of getting a ride on the freight train. I am mindful of something the great travel writer Paul Theroux said: “I have seldom heard a train go by and not wished I was on it.”
