The Mobile Internet and College Kids

Hi there! My name is Tommy and I'm 8 years old. My teacher Mrs. Robinson asked us to write about how mobile internet devices like smartphones and tablets impact college students. I don't actually go to college yet, but I have some older cousins who do, so I'll share what I know about their experiences. First off, what even is the mobile internet? Well, it's being able to access the whole world wide web from a portable, handheld device like a phone or tablet, anytime, anywhere! Instead of having to sit at a desktop computer, college kids can use their mobile gadgets to go online while walking across campus, waiting for the bus, or even sitting in class. Wild, right? From what I've seen with my cousins, mobile internet access is kind of a double-edged sword for college scholars. On one hand, it provides incredible flexibility and convenience. But on the other hand, it can also be a huge distraction and time-waster. Let me break it down: The Good Stuff

Having the entirety of human knowledge at your fingertips is pretty neat, if you ask me. My cousins use their phones to quickly

look up vocabulary words, facts for research papers, directions to appointments across town, and solutions for tricky math problems. Heck, they can even watch educational videos or virtual lectures while they're sprawled out on the quad! Mobile internet helps them learn and study efficiently.

It's also a fantastic organizational tool. Instead of having to lug around heavy textbooks, syllabuses, and planners, modern coeds store all their documents, schedules, and notes digitally in apps and cloud services. Everything they need for classes is consolidated accessibly on their pocket computer. No more forgotten assignment or missed deadlines!

On a social level, mobile internet allows college kids to stay constantly connected with friends, family, and on-campus communities. Group messaging, social media, and online forums help them build supportive networks, make new friends, join clubs, get info about events, and avoid feeling isolated. From a safety perspective, being able to call for help or open a map from anywhere is also hugely beneficial. The Bad Stuff

As good as mobile internet can be, it's also crazy distracting and packed with ways to procrastinate. I know my cousins sometimes spend waaaay too much time watching TikTok videos,

scrolling Reddit, or leaving snide comments on Twitter instead of focusing on their work. It's so easy to get carried away consuming endless entertainment online when you should be studying!

Then there are the mental health risks of being constantly tapped into stressful info streams. Between keeping up with the latest upsetting news stories, dealing with performative social media posturing from peers, and feeling tethered to school work 24/7 because mobile internet makes it inescapable, a lot of college students end up feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Mobile internet addiction is also a real threat. Being able to impulsively pull up games, videos, or endlessly refreshable content feeds makes it all too easy for students to develop unhealthy compulsive habits around their devices. That impacts sleep schedules, productivity, social skills, and overall wellbeing in a major way.

In lectures or group work settings, mobile internet creates an extra temptation to get distracted by non-class activities. It's harder than ever for college kids to stay present and engaged when their pocket is buzzing with notifications and their palm computer is constantly blinking with enticing new content.

Professors have to compete for attention with the whole internet!

My Thoughts

Overall, I can see how mobile internet is both incredibly useful and also potentially quite harmful for college students. It empowers them with abilities previous generations of students never could have imagined, but it also wields threats of disruption and dysfunction.

In the end, it comes down to disciplined self-regulation. As long as college kids can muster the willpower and mindfulness to use mobile internet as an assistive tool while balancing its pull towards distraction, it can be an amazing asset. But if they allow themselves to become enslaved by the impulses and dopamine loops intentionally baked into many digital services, it will undermine their goals.

That's a lot of responsibility for young adults! No wonder my teenage cousins always look so frazzled. I'll be sure to practice my restraint and time management skills now, so when I'm their age I can stay on top of my mobile internet usage habits instead of the other way around.

Or who knows, maybe by the time I'm in college the whole mobile internet fad will be over and we'll be back to using smoke signals and carrier pigeons. Wouldn't that be a kick! But somehow I doubt it...
